LOWONGAN PROJECT LEADER (SUSTAINABLE COFFEE PROGRAM INDONESIA COORDINATOR)

IDH-THE SUSTAINABLE TRADE INITIATIVE
IDH The Sustainable Trade Initiative
Powered by IDH, the Sustainable Coffee Program (SCP) is a global, pre-competitive public-private initiative which involves trade and industry partners, (local) governments, NGOs and standard setting organizations operating in the coffee sector. Our ambition is to accelerate sustainable coffee production to a mainstream breakthrough level by uniting the sector and providing a forum for close collaboration with local governments. The Program aims to increase the production, yields and export availability of sustainably grown coffee, enabling coffee producers to become more resilient in an ever-changing market.

Global coffee consumption continues to grow at a steady pace, particularly in emerging markets. At the same time production has suffered from under-investment, poor production practices and adverse climatic conditions. As a result production has remained below demand.

The Sustainable Coffee Program

The objective of the Sustainable Coffee Program is to further increase sustainable coffee production in a pre-competitive manner and make coffee farmers more resilient in an ever-changing market. An important focus of the program is to increase production, yields and export availability of sustainably grown coffee. It will also work on improving access to finance for farmers, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Collectively the partners aim to increase sustainable green coffee sales from the current 8%. The ambition is to reach 25% in 2015.
Why the Sustainable Coffee Program in Indonesia
Before the rise of Vietnam, Indonesia was the world’s largest producer and exporter of Robusta coffee. Robusta was introduced to Indonesia at the start of the 20th century as a hardier alternative to Arabica. Its importance grew during the colonial period, making Indonesia the first country in the world to grow and export Robusta on a large scale. Today, Robusta represents over 80% of Indonesia’s coffee production.
Coffee is a smallholder crop in Indonesia. Its significance to the economy has been dwarfed by palm oil, which generally grows at lower altitudes than Robusta. Coffee, however, remains an important income source for an estimated 1.5 million farmers across the archipelago. Coffee farming is highly concentrated in the southern provinces of Sumatra. Due to minimal expenditure on agro-inputs and farm maintenance, farming costs are lower than in other origins such as Vietnam
Indonesia's Robusta sector is often overshadowed by Vietnam. Indonesia’s yields are lower, transaction costs are higher, and growth has been flat for most of the past decade. These factors make the business case for investing in sustainable production look less attractive at first glance. However, Indonesia warrants a second look. It has great potential to increase yields – potentially another 6 million bags of coffee – and to double farmer incomes in the process
We seek a dynamic individual with the vision, the experience and the reach to work with the Indonesian coffee sector to realise such high-reaching ambitions. The Sustainable Coffee Program Coordinator represents the SCP in Indonesia. The coordinator will be accountable to the SCP Steering Group, and report regularly to the IDH Coffee Program Manager.
