Under the auspices of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), an international coalition of leading conservation groups, the Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Agriculture Division works with farmers to ensure compliance with the SAN standards for protecting wildlife, farm land, workers’ rights and local communities. Farms that meet these rigorous environmental, ethical and economic standards are awarded the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal.
The Sustainable Agriculture Division consists of the Sustainable Landscapes Program, the Sustainable Value Chains Program, the Sustainable Agriculture Auditing Services Program, the Traceability Unit and Program Administration. The work of the Sustainable Agriculture Division is closely linked to the work of the SAN Secretariat, housed in Rainforest Alliance’s Costa Rica office.

As the certification body Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), Sustainable Farm Certification, International (SFC)contributes to sustaining social and environmental best practices through transparent, independent and objective certification of farms or groups in accordance with SAN’s guidelines. SFC is responsible for making certification decisions based on its evaluations of audit reports.

Projects Coordinator, Asia-Pacific Region, Sustainable Agriculture Division
Denpasar (Bali)

Position Summary:

The Projects Coordinator will support the Manager, Asia-Pacific Region to build and manage coffee, tea, cocoa and spices field programs and their associated projects in the region. S/he will support (but not supervise) the field technicians’ work, producer training activities, relations with partners, reports to donors, site visits by companies and donors, and other program development across the Asia Pacific region, especially Indonesia and Vietnam.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead developing project work plans and budgets, in coordination with the Manager and the international program managers;
  • Support the Manager to recruit and induct technicians and to develop agreements with implementing partners;
  • Prepare progress reports for donors and maintain correspondence with them;
  • Identify and gather information pertaining to key stakeholders; develop and maintain relations with key stakeholders in the tea, coffee and cocoa sectors, including producers and producer groups, processors, exporters, NGOs, and representatives of important government agencies;
  • In coordination with the international program managers, compile and maintain up-to-date information about tea, coffee, cocoa and spices production and producers: production volumes, types, principle markets and producers;
  • Identify candidates to become local trainers and auditors;
  • Organize and host visits by RA staff and others that they may arrange, such as journalist tours and donor visits to projects;
  • Participate in fundraising activities and the development of new projects and programmes in the region; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in agronomy or related field; Master’s Degree preferred;
  • 3-5 years of experience in agriculture in the region; must be familiar with agricultural supply chains, farming and agriculture production and processing activitiesboth large-scale and small-scale;
  • Familiarity with certification/verification issues and systems, ideally involving agriculture and small-scale producers preferred;
  • Solid understanding of value chains and experience of working with companies and farmers;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English, verbal communication skills in Indonesian, written skills in Indonesian preferred, other local languages are an advantage;
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations;
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office and Internet);
  • Experience in the development of work plans and budgets; ability to work independently and in a team towards defined objectives and goals; and
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively in Indonesia and other countries in Asia-Pacific up to 40% of the time and to spend significant periods in rural areas.
