Conservation International, an international non-governmental organization, is seeking applicants for senior level technical manager position to be based in Medan.
CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE MANAGER
The function of this position is to advise on the linkages between coffee agronomy, farm productivity, farmer livelihoods and forest-based land management alternatives as part of the restoration and reforestation of degraded areas, as well as forest protection, among farms in the coffee landscapes of Northern Sumatra. The Conservation Agriculture Manager will also work with the Coffee and Conservation Program Manager located in Takengon, Aceh to provide agronomic expertise for purposes of community engagement, training and project development. S/he will also engage with partner agronomists, such as with the Starbucks Coffee Company, ECOM and other entities to deliver high level technical advice to CI’s projects in Northern Sumatra as well as headquarters’ staff engaged in agricultural sustainability programs.
The Conservation Agriculture Manager will base in Medan, North Sumatra with frequent travel to project sites throughout Sumatra under supervision of the CI Indonesia Sumatra Program if needed. S/he will coordinate with other CI staff in Aceh Tengah, Medan, Jakarta and other relevant CI Offices
Responsibilities:

- Provide technical support to the development and implementation of sustainable coffee management and it best practices (e.g. training courses, farmer support centers).
- Support the assessment of information, mapping and structuring of georeferenced data base and development of spatial analysis regarding land use, socioeconomic and environmental aspects, including the provision of ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation on the coffee production landscape.
- Provide technical support and facilitate adhesion of rural producers to forest protection/restoration activities and environmental regularization of rural properties, including the engagement to existing public policies of incentive / payment for ecosystem service initiatives, and assist with awareness building strategies towards that end.
- Support fundraising and reporting to national and international donors regarding the above mentioned topics.
- Report to internal and external stakeholder as required, including regular monthly project progress reports to CI’s internal project management team. Provide guidance on changing priorities.
Qualifications:
- Master degree or degree in forestry, agriculture or other related background, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experienced on agriculture and forest assessments.
- Experience in the coffee sector, including a focus on production.
- Excellent both written and oral communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
- Experience on Project development and writing funding proposals
Preferred:
- Confidence and ability to develop personal contacts with partners, private sector and government officials.
- Strong interest in environmental issues and eagerness to expand knowledge.
- Computer skills and experience in relevant software.
- Networking ability and facilitation skills.
- Experience with target group research and program evaluation, including survey design, focus groups, polling, etc.
- Self-motivated, able to travel in the region, and be able to meet project deadlines often under difficult circumstances.
- Knowledge on restoration of degraded areas, forestry, agroforestry and silvopastoral systems;
- Knowledge on payment for ecosystem service programs, in particular forest-based carbon project design and development;
- Familiarity with geographic information systems;
